The first catholic church built in Korea, Yakhyeon Catholic Church is an early example of Gothic architecture of the 19th century.The brickwork of Yakhyeon Catholic Church is renowned for its architectural beauty. On the occasion of the 34 Worldwide SketchCrawl we sketchers met in the precincts of the church and enjoyed sketching in and out of the historied church building all day long.

Yesterday I sketched around Seoul Station where I've drawn many times. Seoul Station and the surroundings form an exquisite harmony between the old and new buildings. The more I draw on the same spot, the more I find a new angle.

The day scene was different from night. The atmosphere inside and outside would be better at night. But it seemed better to sketch at day for we could see more buildings clearly.

It was so cold outdoors to sketch that we met indoors and sketched freely at market building. There are various kinds of regional specialties, craftworks, pottery, and various traditional items and many others. Those are really interesting subjects. Dream Cinema is a Korean movie theater located in Seodaemun, Seoul. Originally called Hwayang Theater(화양극장), it opened in 1964 and is today the city's last remaining single screen theater. In recent years the theater has been limited to screening free previews or films that are long past their opening dates for old aged audience. Unfortunately this theater building would be closed December 31, 2011 on account of redevelopment plan for a major hotel. But this spot will always remain a pleasant memory for us.

A few days ago I had a good chance to sketch around Oksu-dong, but it was awfully cold outdoors. At first I sketched a scenery near Oksu subway station looking out of the window at the platform by the railroadside. And then I made some sketches of Han River inside KW Jung's house to which I was invited lunch. Oksu-dong is one of the most suitable places for urban sketchers in Seoul.

It was very cold so much that ice skimmed the palette while painting watercolors. In spite of unfavorable conditions, I couldn't help sketching very hard in front of the wonderful subject. Insa-dong is the most suitable location for our sketchers in all respects.

I've sketched around Seoul Station from time to time for several years. Every time I sketch, I used to light upon the new sceneries to my taste. It's very interesting to sketch the old and new building complexes with crowded people such as Seoul Station. I'll continue to sketch such subjects in my spare time.

Yesterday we sketchers met at Yongsan Electronics Shopping Mall that is the largest electronic shopping complex in Korea. The weather was cold and windy to sketch outdoors.
At the beginning I sketched on the concourse in front of the Terminal Mall and afterwards went into the indoor lounge of that building connected to Yongsan Station. Numbers of buildings with crowded people are very interesting subjects wherever we go.

Yesterday the weather was clear and so warm for November. We Seoul sketchers met at 'Meeting Place' at Noryangjin Fish Market which is Seoul's largest market for marine products. This 66,000 square meter facility houses over 700 shops selling fresh and dried fish and squid from 15 fishing ports around Korea. We drew various sceneries around fish market and had a delicious lunch time with animated conversation about 'Urban Sketchers' all together. I sketched some attractive old-fashioned buildings here and there with watercolors. It was very delightful Saturday indeed.

Sewoon Shopping Mall is a shopping area located between Jongno 3-ga and Toegyero 3-ga, which was the modernization icon of the city in the 1960s. The shopping area is well known for selling electronics. But recently, the Seoul metropolitan government began demolishing its buildings, starting with Hyundai Arcade, with the intention of building tree-covered plazas in their place.

The area around Sewoon shopping centre will be reconstructed to constitute central Seoul. Lots of old aged buildings in the neighborhood harmonize with each other spontaneously. I will visit and sketch around the worn-out buildings frequently before demolition is accelerated

Konkuk University, which is conveniently located on Hwayangdong in Seoul, is one of the leading private universities in Korea. The Campus is not only relatively spacious, considering it's located on downtown Seoul, but easy of access from Seoul Subway Line 2 or Line 7. Besides the magnificent Ilgam Lake with beautiful skyline of cityscape shows me a fantastic scenery. The university campus in downtown has a great charm for urban sketchers.

Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine is one of the famous historical sites remaining in Korea. It's located on the banks of the Han River on the east side of the Yanghwa Ferry Point crossing, the top of a small cliff rises high. The construction of the Shrine began on 1966, the 100th anniversary of the Pyong-in Persecution, and was completed in 1967. 103 Saints were canonized on 1984. A few days ago, I visited the Shrine and drew some sketches with a reverential attitude.

The Gaemi Maeul(Ant Village) is famous for the beautiful village located on the hillside of Mt.Inwang. What is more, this village is favorably situated in downtown Seoul, so it's possible to sketch frequently for us. A few days ago, on my way home from the office, a construction field caught my eyes. The figure of neighboring building adjacent to the ruins, which had hidden by the demolished building, was exposed untouched. I sketched the naked scene immediately before disappearance.

Myeongnyundang is one of the main component building of Seoul Munmyo, a Confucian shrine complex, which is more than 600 years and adjacent to Sungkyunkwan University up to the present.

Last Saturday, the weather was so good for our sketchers to be absorbed in drawing all day. I drew and painted various subjects this and that, enjoying colorful sceneries to the full around the intimate cultural properties.

Last saturday, I painted in watercolor on the subject of prison with Seoul urban sketchers. All of us had a pleasant sketch time in a harmonious atmosphere. My watercolor paintings of the day are as follows.

A week ago the Independence Day, Aug.15th, I made on-the-spot survey of the present condition of this Prison History Hall, sketching various types of building with red bricks. Some sketches on the very day are as follows.

The Seodaemun Prison History Hall is not only well-known as a historical site, but useful to draw buildings of red bricks clustered close together. For our sketchers, Seodaemun Independence Park is a quite suitable place to draw various kinds of the old and new subjects.

Once in a while, I attempt to sketch in monochrome. To simplify the color may be uninteresting, but the trial is useful in many ways, for instance, to make an experiment in complete control of value, to experience a particular impression of the dominant color, and so on. I like such a good potentiality of the monochrome.

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park (DDP) is a large urban development project under construction in Dongdaemun, Seoul. It will contain of a multi-use park, a fashion plaza, an underground mall, and a restoration of a number of items of national heritage.Perhaps it will be completed next year.

I used to sketch this attractive subject several times recently. Owing to the hot weather, I sketched this magnificent structure looking over the window, within air-conditioned buildings on the opposite side.

The rural villages in Seoul

Junggye-dong 104 village is well known for its rural atmosphere surrounded with woods and hills on the outskirts of Seoul. My sketches in this place are as follows.

Hongje-dong Ant village(alias Gaemi-Maul)is located on the hillside of Mt.Inwang in downtown Seoul. It is famous for the beauty of wall paintings drawn by several art colleges' students. My sketches are as follows.

A lot of old aged villages are still well-preserved in Seoul. But it's possible that these villages may be disappearing in order to construct highrise apartment complexes. I hope these would be in existence by renovation for harmony with nature.

Mt.Inwang is one of the well-known tourist attractions in downtown Seoul. The mountain stands at a height of 338 meters, not so far from my village. From the top of the mountain, we can enjoy fascinating vistas of the city of Seoul. Some time ago, I could have a distant view of mountains and fantastic cityscapes not only from the summit, but from the important parts of ridge of the mountain.

The Arcade a long history over 40 years where more than 230 musical instrument shops sell all kinds of musical instruments. I sketched the features of the building at first. And after that I enjoyed sketching the musical instruments with other sketchers.

For our sketchers, Hwasu Wharf is one of the most attractive place in old town Incheon. There were plenty variegated subjects, such as the fisherboat and the ironworks, moreover the memoried sceneries of the old aged village.Each time I visit Incheon, I amuse myself by sketching this and that freely at the harmonious wharf.

Dongdaemun and its surroundings have a numerous subject for our Seoul urban sketchers. Those have a long history of Seoul and have undergone some major changes into Fashion Mecca in Seoul during the past several years. The more I sketch, the more interested I become.

Namsan is well-known as a celebrated mountain in downtown Seoul. The mountain and surrounding area is a public park maintained by the city government. It is a popular spot for a panoramic view of Seoul. Moreover there are a lot of interesting subjects for sketchers at the change of seasons. I sketched diverse sceneries walking along the Namsan Circular Road halfway up the mountain.

Seoul sketchers including me met at the Seoul Railroad Station for the 30th Worldwide sketchcrawl. The Old Seoul Station was finished on 1925. Recently it was declared national historical monument and under remodelling into a Culture Complex Building. The top one was sketched on the bus stop crowded with passersby in order to express the good view and strong monumentality.

Last month, I participated in the final workshop of Korea outdoor watercolorists association at Deokchon-ri. There We were invited to Song Yong's painting studio connected to his country house. Inner space of the large studio with high ceiling was so impressive and attracted my mind. I was intoxicated with the artistic mood, so I painted enthusiastically.

A few days ago, I took a trip to Turkey with BH Yoo and several Korean tourists. A number of cultural heritage and architecture are dreamy and mysterious. On Saturday 31 July, 28th Sketchcrawl in Seoul, We sketched around Hongik University in the morning. And after a lunch We moved to Tuksum Park, Han River. There were a great spectacle with the wind-surfing scenery and a lot of perspective views. Though It was so hot and humid, owing to the cold wind We had a pleasant sketch time all together.

On Sunday morning every week, just before departure for weekly outdoor watercolor painting, I used to sketch several sceneries around the wide parking lot of Hyundai Department at Apgujungdong. A few days ago, I went downtown and strolled along the Chungmuro and Jongno 3-ga street. There located several famous but old theaters. I sketched the buildings remembering the modern history of Seoul.
The top one was reconstructed at the present site. The middle one was remodelled into a multiple art performance complex building. The bottom is well preserved with original structure and is now being used for old people from a year ago.

Last saturday I went to Sofitel hotel to celebrate the wedding of my friend's daughter. Before I entered the ceremony hall I sketched Jangchoong gymnasium and the hotel. There were players playing music for wedding. In the lounge I sketched people. They looked like mother and son.
