Sometimes, I used to encountered with the unexpected dynamic scenes in my daily life.

Whenever I feel an impulse to sketch, I draw them immediately.

느닷없이 살아있는 장면을 보는 순간, 

그리고 싶은 충동에 따라 본능적으로

휘리릭~ 그리는 스케치는 언제나 상쾌합니다.

설명보다  느낌이 앞서기 때문인가 봅니다.

This autumn I visited Heungguksa Temple twice for temple sketching. The temple is not so far from my village and access road is pretty smooth to approach. In the precincts of the temple,The yellow chrysanthemums were in full glory all over the place and I was fascinated by the scenic beauty of the colorful fall leaves around the temple. A number of temple buildings, including Yaksajeon(1686~), were well arranged harmoniously combined with one another surrounding the courtyard. 

Sketching the traditional architecture is very helpful for me to develop the sense of proportion.

흥국사는 서울 근교의 가까운 사찰로 넓고 아늑한 분위기를 지닌 고찰입니다. 

완만한 사찰 진입로 주변과 평탄한 경내 건물들을 돌며 스케치하기 좋습니다. 

높낮이의 자연스러운 흐름, 단절과 이음사이의 분위기, 형태의 구성미.... 

전통건축 스케치는 비례, 대칭, 균형, 조화~~그릴수록 도움이 되는 훌륭한 소재입니다. 

two buildings overlap together

While passing by Insa-dong street, I came across an impressive scene two buildings harmonized united together. The small building is Chundogyo's Central Headquaters (천도교 중앙대교당) with brick built in Gothic and Baroque style, and another large one is Sueun Assembly House Building (수운회관) with concrete built in modern style architecture. Two historic buildings are well-matched together beautifully. So I took my seat in a good view point and sketched the harmonious scene carefully.

천도교 중앙대교당과 수운회관 건물은 같은 장소에 있으면서도 

크기, 재료, 건축 양식, 배경, 상징성.....에서 전혀 다릅니다. 

두 건물이 떨어져 있으면 서로 대비가 되는 좋은 소재이지만 

겹쳐 그려도 조화를 이루는 컴포지션이 될 듯 합니다.

sketching with Outdoor Watercolor Artists' group

Last Sunday morning I joined in the members of Korea Outdoor Watercolor Artists' group for painting watercolors. The fall weather was so fine to enjoy outdoor paintings. We left the parking lot of Apgujeong Hyundai Department Store for Chiljangni village located in Ahnsung City. A picturesque image of the buildings opposite side of the parking lot impressed me. And the rural atmosphere with natural sceneries in the countryside attracted me peacefully. The both places supplied good subjects to me. 

I drew some sketches here and there enjoying the good air with the group in a long time.

가끔 전원 스케치를 하는 것도 어반 스케치에 크게 도움이 됩니다.
맑은 공기, 넓은 시야, 들판에서의 호연지기...자연과 교감하는 좋은 기회이지요. 모처럼 전원 마을 수채화를 그리러 정든 野水會 회원들과 함께 가을의 정취를 즐긴 하루였습니다.
작은 스케치나 큰 작품 모두 열정의 깊이가 같고 소중한 것이 작가의 자세라고 느낍니다.

After lunch, I dropped in for tea at McDonald's located in Jongno-2ga, Seoul. While drinking a coffee, in the seat facing me many people were talking with somebody in different poses. 

I sketched the figures immediately before leaving their seats.

커피숍에서의 정형 인물 스케치는 약속된 포즈와 달라서 

처음 보는 사람이 언제 떠날지 모른다는 긴장감 속에서~~ 

순간적으로 인물의 느낌을 잡아내는 스릴 만점의 작업 같습니다.

Autumn Sports Festival at Jamsil Auxiliary Stadium (잠실 보조경기장), Seoul

Last weekend, 2013 Sports Festival of Seoul Institute of Registered Architects(SIRA) was held in Jamsil Auxiliary Stadium located in Songpa-gu,Seoul. It was so fine and the skies were clear, numbers of SIRA architects including me enjoyed pleasant time all day, playing football and foot volleyball, having a singing contest, entertaining performance, and so on. I sketched some colorful sceneries from place to place, walking about the stadium covered with beautiful green grass.

2013 서울 건축사 한마음 체육대회는 바쁜 일상을 벗어나 모처럼 한데 모여 호연지기를 키우는 단합 대회였습니다. 유니폼을 받았지만 스케치를 하기 바빠서 대선배들도 뛰는 경기를 바라 볼 수 밖에 없었으나, 스케치를 보고 좋아하는 동료들과 함께 푸르른 가을을 만끽한 축제였습니다. 건축가들이 스포츠와 더불어 스케치와 한마음이 된 날이었습니다.

One afternoon last week, the weather was clear before sunset, I climbed mountainside of Buckhansan National Park near my home after work. The climbing route, from Gugi-dong to Tangchundaesung, slopes gently and lots of spectacular sceneries made me feel refreshed. During the break while walking the route, I drew some beautiful scenes here and there rapidly before dark.

북한산은 서울 최고의 명산입니다. 아름다운 산봉우리들의 스카이라인과 실루엣을 즐기면서 일상의 피로를 씻고 건강도 챙기면서 힐링 스케치도 할 수 있지요. 사시사철의 변화무쌍한 운치를 느낄수 있는 북한산을 그리며 스케치는 항상 '말없는 스승'같다고 생각합니다.
